The perfect terrarium for moss frogs
A species-appropriate terrarium is the foundation for healthy and active moss frogs. Our animals come from near-natural breeding conditions – and their home should look just as natural. Here we show you what really matters when setting it up.
Size & Structure
For a small group of three to four moss frogs, we recommend a tank measuring at least 60 × 45 × 60 cm (L × D × H).
Moss frogs are excellent climbers, therefore the terrarium should be tall and offer plenty of branches, roots and cork tubes.
A slightly sloping base with a small water feature at the front ensures that excess spray water can collect and the humidity remains stable.
Humidity & Climate
A constant humidity level between 80 and 95% is ideal. We use a fine misting system that sprays at intervals, thus mimicking the natural tropical climate.
Good ventilation remains important – stagnant air promotes mold growth.
The temperature should range between 22 and 26 °C during the day, dropping slightly at night. A combination of LED grow lights ensures the right climate and supports plant growth.
Plants & Decor
Real plants not only create a more attractive overall appearance, they also stabilize the microclimate. Particularly suitable are:
- Ficus pumila
- Moss
- Bromeliads
- Labisia
- Ferns, etc.
I grow plants myself, so if you have any questions about the right planting, I'm happy to help.
In combination with pieces of bark, leaves and cork tubes, a lively mini-biotope is created in which the frogs feel safe and comfortable.
substrate
We use a mixture of unfertilized soil, coconut coir, and sphagnum moss as substrate. This combination retains moisture and prevents waterlogging.
A drainage layer of expanded clay or lava granules at the bottom ensures that excess water can drain away – this keeps the climate stable and the substrate fresh for a long time.
Conclusion
The perfect terrarium for moss frogs combines technology, nature and aesthetics.
When climate, lighting and furnishings are in harmony, the animals exhibit their natural behavior – and you can observe them in an environment that comes remarkably close to their real habitat.
